Long before it was possible to measure the alcohol by volume of a drink, the Royal Navy faced this problem: making sure that gunpowder remained flammable even if a barrel of gin broke during transport. In the days of cannonballs and muskets, in fact, wet gunpowder represented a death sentence in battle. The "Navy strength" label indicated the safe spirit to be transported on Navy ships and was affixed only to the barrels that passed the empirical test: after dipping a few grains of gunpowder in the gin they tried to set them on fire. The Navy measurement continued until 1890 and still today indicates a distillate with an alcohol content greater than 57%. The water used is meteoric water held back for 80 years by the huge mountain range that runs along the west coast of the South Island and filtered deeply through underground rocks.
